Pediatric Diabetic Ketoacidosis-January 27, 2015

As part of its public awareness lectures series, new hospital organized an educational lecture about Pediatric Diabetic Ketoacidosis on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 to raise health awareness in the society by Dr. Ahmed Salem - Consultant & Clinical Director of Pediatrics & Neonatal Department. he talked about Diabetic Ketoacidosis (Definition / Pathophysiology / Clinical manifestations / Treatment / Complications) first of all what is the Definition of Diabetic Ketoacidosis it is Blood glucose level > 200 mg/dl, Blood pH < 7.3, HCO3 < 20 mEq/L, Anion Gap > 12 & Elevated serum or urine ketones.

Pathophysiology of carbohydrate metabolism Glucose and lipid metabolism are regulated by insulin, and its counter regulatory hormones:

• Glucagon
• Catecholamines
• Cortisol
• Growth hormone

The Clinical manifestations (Classic triad: polydipsia, polyuria, polyphagia, Weight loss, Nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, Changes in breathing pattern & Precipitating event: infection, psychosocial stress). Treatment (Manage with oral hydration + S.C. Insulin, Use routine S.C. Insulin regimens & the Laboratory assessment is not needed). the Complications (Dehydration, Hypotension / Shock, Hypokalemia, hyperkalemia, Hypoglycemia, Aspiration pneumonia, Sepsis, Acute tubular necrosis, Cerebral edema)

Diabetes Everywhere-December 9, 2014

As part of its public awareness lectures series, new hospital organized an educational lecture about Diabetes Everywhere on Tuesday, December 09, 2014 to raise health awareness in the society by Dr. Habib Steitieh - Consultant of Diabetologist and Endocrinologist. he talked about the number of people with diabetes is increasing in every country, also about Diabetes Mellitus 1500 BC Egypt:(Ebers Papyrus describes a disorder with frequent urination and weight loss), “Diabetes” is Greek for “siphon” & “Mellitus” is Latin for “sweet”
What is diabetes?

- Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when the body cannot produce enough or effectively use insulin.
- Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that allows glucose from food to enter the body’s cells where it is converted into energy needed by muscles and tissues to function.
- A person with diabetes does not absorb glucose properly, and glucose stays circulating in the blood damaging tissues over time.

Emphasizing the hospital’s vision of the younger generation as a vital element in shaping Kuwait’s future, New Mowasat Hospital hosted a visit of 3rd year Health Information Administration students from Kuwait University, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences. Ms. Fawziya Al Mansouri, Manager of the Medical Records Department, Mr. Pierre Aoun, Customer and Support Services Manager, and Mr. Yasser Tarabay guided the field trip of 15 students to observe and experience real-world applications of HIA practices in New Mowasat as an internationally accredited healthcare facility
